Dream Career

Finding the career of your dreams

The pressure is on to find your dream career, no matter your age. For some, this maybe simple decision but for others like me, the process was very painful. People had high expectations for me and I wasn’t sure that I could live up to them. As a little girl, my dream career was to become a super model but faith was cruel, and I only grew to be 5 feet tall. LOL! Alas my dream had to change. I then wanted to become a lawyer but I would come to realize that, that profession was not for me. That didn’t mean that I would never find a great job, just that my childhood dreams wouldn’t come true.

I’m not sure exactly where you are in your life right now, but which ever stage you’re at, whether  you’re in high school, college, university or none of the above; I hope these tips can shed some light on your future occupation and help you shorten the search for your dream career.

Tips to find the perfect career

  1. There is no real rush

From an early age, you’re asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. Then when you get to school they make you do projects about your chosen career and write papers on the subject. But that doesn’t mean you must only choose that career as an adult. Some people only find their dream career in their 30’s, 40’s and even 50’s. There is no real rush. Maybe right now you have a young family to support or you just want to gain financial freedom. Work at a dead-end job in the meantime and keep dreaming of what you want to really do with your life.

  1. Pick 5 dream career and then try them

Why don’t you try your dream career on for size? How will you know if that profession is for you if you don’t try it out? I tried being a lawyer for a day and it didn’t feel right. The schooling and the power was too much for me. I also tried architecture, legal secretary, auto body painter and shoe designer. Those careers were worlds apart from each other (I know) but I tried them all. Therefore, search online and start calling companies to see if you can shadow someone for a day without pay. You never know what you might like doing.

visualize your dream career

  1. Visualize

Please don’t laugh, this really works.

Grab a piece of paper.

Now write down HOW you would like your perfect day to go.

Be very detailed.

Example:

I wake up in a very comfortable bed, with multiple comfortable pillow on my bed. I open my eyes to a very large room where my partner brings me breakfast in bed on a silver tray. The room in large and I’m wearing silk pajamas. I get out of bed…

Write your dream day story on paper and then read it back to yourself. Make sure that you write down your complete day from start to end. This will help you choose from your list of top 5 careers, which one could offer you your dream lifestyle. (If you have any questions about this process feel free to contact me)

  1. Pick a career

Since there is no real rush, why not pick one from your top 5 dream careers and try it out for 6 months to a year. You can always change your mind and try another one. Hence, if you want to be a lawyer, take the classes and see if you like it. If you don’t then try something else. You must enjoy what you do in life, since you spend so much time at work. Therefore, if you don’t enjoy that career then try something different. It’s your life.

create your on dream career

  1. If you can’t make a decision

If you can’t pick the perfect career or  seem to find something that you’re prepared to spend the rest of your life doing, then invent a career. Think about what you enjoy doing. What are your best qualities, skills and/or talents? If you don’t know what your skills and talents are; ask your family and friends for help. They will be brutally honest with you don’t worry. I’m in a great job and I don’t even know what my job tittle is. LOL

Hope these tips helped you as much as they have helped me. Your dream career is out there, just put some enough into finding it.
