I’m not even sure that “importance squares” is the right name for it but I do live by the idea. Since, this as helped me numerous time when I couldn’t sleep nor focus without stressing out about life’s problems; the squares were a life saver. Therefore, I made the decision to share it with you in the hopes that it could help you also.

This stress management tool is for the moments when life seem to be shooting problems at you non-stop. And your decisions need to be made asap, but you’re only one person. This is when the importance squares are most effective in your life. They give you the time to slow down and prioritize your life’s problems. Hence you can face them one at a time by importance.

What are importance squares?

The importance square is a sorting tool that helps you focus on your more important problems first. Therefore, a place where you may sort all the stressful things going on in your mind rather than dwelling on multiple items at a time. In addition, you can make these squares at anytime on a piece of paper. It doesn’t have to be neat or clean, just place your problems in them.

Step 1:

Firstly, create your 4 Squares and in each square, write down the following

Square 1 = Important/Urgent

Square 2 = Important/Not Urgent

Square 3 = Not Important/Not Urgent

Square 4 = Not Important/Not Urgent

Example (make 4 squares):

IMPORTANT/URGENT (I/U)

IMPORTANT/NOT URGENT (I/NU)

NOT IMPORTANT/URGENT (NI/U)

NOT IMPORTANT/NOT URGENT (NI/NU)

Step 2

Secondly, make a list of all your worries, stresses and problems which are making you anxious. This can be as lengthy or short as you would like, just write them all down.

  • I must buy a birthday present

  • My car needs to be repaired

  • Pay my parking ticket

  • Should to do my hair

  • I need new jeans

  • My rent is due and I don’t have the money

  • I would like to have a vacation

  • I should figure out my life

Step 3

Thirdly, once you’ve made your list and nothing else is running though your mind; then, it’s time to fill in the squares with your problems or worries.

Ask yourself is the item Important, Urgent, Either or Neither?

IMPORTANT/URGENT (I/U)

 –        Repair the car

–        Find money to pay rent

IMPORTANT/NOT URGENT (I/NU)

 –        Pay parking ticket

 –        Need to figure out my life

 –        Buy birthday present

–        Need to do my hair

NOT IMPORTANT/NOT URGENT (NI/NU)

 –        Need new jeans

 –        Need a vacation

Step 4

In conclusion, once you’ve filled in the information and prioritize your problems by importance; you’ve now gained clarity. Therefore, focus on the matters that are Important and Urgent. Then when you have completed all the task from those boxes, you may move on to the others. Remember what’s important to you may not be important to someone else.
